If I am being honest I would tell you that when I turn on the radio and hear the news my heart hurts. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed with grief by the awful ways people treat each other and the earth. It can really get me down. So much suffering can grow out of even one person’s unwillingness or inability to make space for their pain. It is not a skill most of us have and our culture does not support sitting with and feeling our feelings.
But, if I am being honest I would also tell you that when I see Hakomi clients I am overwhelmed with gratitude and joy at least once every session. That is because I am able to be part of and witness the beauty of a person who is showing up, who is making space for themselves and their internal experience and feeling their feelings- even when those feelings are painful.
I am certain that this matters. That each time one of us takes the time to feel our feelings, to allow our inner experience to unfold, to connect with ourselves or another human being or to practice self-compassion, it is a step in the right direction. A step toward becoming a more compassionate world that knows how to be gentle and loving and authentic and take care of ourselves and each other.
One of my favorite places to be is in a session with a client. Because I always leave full of hope and gratitude- for how human beings can be- for our potential to face hard things, listen to our inner wisdom and develop resources within ourselves and our communities.
If you have ever been a client of mine, thank you. I appreciate you showing up and doing the work. It is changing the world.
